I Can't Believe This...

We can't believe that another month has already passed by and we've had another HUGELY successful and highly motivating month. We have donated tons of leadership hours and into the thousands of dollars to local Sharyland ISD Schools. This has been a huge blessing in our lives. Like they always say, "The teacher always learns more than the students."

Helping and donating our time in the Sharyland ISD Schools has literally taught us so much and has made us better people. O.k, so with that being said we HAVE A HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT TO MAKE.

We are officially beginning the Enrollment for our "Valley Famous" 2011 Super Summer Camp! This is going to be a Summer Camp like no other. We have been hosting full day summer camp activities for 7 years now and it has been an absolute blast. Let me tell you about it.

1. It's the FIRST A+ Summer Camp that provides an all day learning experience for children. In 2005 we began a tradition that other camps have tried to mimick, but lack the SECRETS to our success.

2. Here's SECRET #1 that other Daycare and Summer Camps don't offer. 24 FULLY Booked and paid for FIELD TRIPS. That's right, I said 24! How's that for a fun summer.

This past weekend the students at Mile High Karate-Mission demonstrated their ability to achieve the goals they set during their testing and advancement. Students from all levels demonstrated their martial arts skills, their academic/career achievements and their incredible personal character.

Award levels from Beginner Gold Belts to Advanced Conditional Black Belts were awarded to students of all ages. We are incredibly proud of what they have done and will continue to do on their way to Black Belt and beyond!

Jason and Sergio Solis recently attended the Mile High Karate Black Belt Retreat in Keystone, Colorado.The retreat was a combination of Black Belt testing and school training for the various Mile High schools across the world.

Mile High Karate-Mission recently hosted the Master Dave Pangan "Time Travel" Info Seminar here in South Texas. The seminar covered traditional Wing Chun forms and applications raging from beginner to itermediate and some advanced teachings. The energy was positive and exciting and every student came away with a greater understanding of this amazing art.

Master Dave Pangan will be coming down again in March of 2011 to cover more advanced principles and applications. The students at Mile High Karate-Mission can't wait!!!

Mile High Karate recently partnered with Bensten Elementary for an After School Program fundraiser!!!

The instructors and staff at Mile High Karate donated their time and resources in an effort to teach the Character Development and Leadership skills that Mile High Karate is known for.

With the support and effort of the staff and Adminstration of Bensten Elementary, Mile High Karate was able to raise$2,400.00 for the students!!!

Mile High Karate believes that businesses have a responsibility to give back to their commuity and are happy to lead the way.

MILE HIGH CONFIDENCE

Nothing significant occurs in your life without confidence. Even the most insignificant and mundane tasks of your daily life require an unconscious confidence to do them. To accomplish new tasks and goals, you must first "know" that they are possible.

There would be no reason to make plans or put them into action unless you first convinced yourself that those plans would guide you to your goals. Without that conviction, you might be tempted to stop, if the journey to your goal doesn't go as planned.

Have confidence in your ability to reach a goal. Your confidence will drive and motivate you to work hard, even though the challenges are great.

PARENTAL DISCIPLINE

The expectations we have for our children will directly influence the success that they are able to achieve in this life. If we expect them to do nothing or be nothing….than more than likely they will become nothing. If we see their potential and push them to reach it in a positive and loving way than more than likely they will achieve it. That’s not to say there are not some self-motivated individuals who defy the odds and succeed or people who have every advantage given to them and still fail; but they are the exception rather than the rule.

Is it a coincidence that both the Manning brothers are Superbowl Champions, or that the Williams sisters are both tennis champions? The answer is a resounding no. Their success is a combination of talent, potential, desire and PARENTAL DISCIPLINE.

Now let’s talk about that phrase PARENTAL DISCIPLINE. I remember a specific time when I was talking to some friends of mine about our program here at Mile High Karate-Mission. Their son had experienced a variety of discipline problems at home and school and they were affecting his ability to advance in grade levels at school and were putting a strain on the family relationships. They loved the character development and leadership program that our school offers and were excited to implement the program and begin seeing results. There was only one problem. They had to discuss it with their son and make sure he was 100% on board.

Now really think about that. Their son was 5 years old and had just begun his first year of Kindergarten. He was already experiencing discipline problems and he was affecting life at home in a negative way. But it was HIS decision whether or not he wanted to better himself. Now, I don’t remember a lot about being five…..but I would not trust a five year old to make rational and educated decisions about life. He’s not supposed to! If he could decide what was best for him….he wouldn’t need parents! For those that don’t believe me…go and ask an average five year old if he would rather go to school or play at the park. So now comes the big question……where is the PARENTAL DISCIPLINE? Where is the discipline that parents should have to make decisions for their children that they know will affect them in a positive way?

The hard truth is that it is fading away. With parents trying more and more to be their child’s friend as opposed to parent and assuming that love and caring are expressed with the latest video game or toy, the authority of the parent is dwindling away……and the kids know it.

So let’s get back to my friends and their son. It turns out that their son didn’t want to do martial arts. Over the past couple of years he has also not wanted to play baseball, football, soccer, and hockey or continue in school. So where is he today? He spends most of his time at home playing video games. His behavior at home has improved greatly. Since he spends between 5 and 6 hours a day playing video games his parents hardly notice he’s even there. He never fusses or gets upset. Unless of course they need him to stop playing his games for a while. His grades and behavior in school have not really improved, but I guess that’s the teacher’s problem.

Now I’m not saying this is a result of not putting him in a martial arts program; although, putting him in our program would have more than likely resulted in a more motivated, confident and academically successful child. This however is mainly the result of a lack of PARENTAL DISCILINE.

When parents realize that they know what’s best for their children, when they draw on their life experience to guide their children toward what they know to be right, and when they accept the fact that what’s best for their children may not be the most popular decision in their child’s eyes, then they will have the foundation for helping their child become a success.

I never met a parent who watched their child graduate from Harvard and regretted being too hard on them. I have also never met a parent who bailed their son or daughter out of jail and didn’t wonder if they could have done more.

This weekend Jason and Sergio Solis, the Mile High Karate brothers were at Tinseltown theater in Mission promoting the relase of the new KARATE KID movie. Mile High Karate recently partnered with Angels of Love to help raise funds for an Emergency Shelter and Rehabilitation Treatment Center for children in the Rio Grande Valley. Together we put on an incredible fund raiser at Peter Piper Pizza in McAllen and had a wonderful showing of support from the community.

Angels of Love is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping abused and neglected children in the Rio Grande Valley. Mile High Karate was proud to help support this wonderful and important cause.

During the past month we have gotten a lot of questions from our parents and adult students about being mentally prepared for dangerous situations. With the escalating violence resulting from the drug wars on the border more and more people are seeking to prepare themselves better for potentially dangerous situations.

The scariest part of what we see on the news is the thought of not knowing what to do if it ever happens to us!!

Mile High Karate-Mission was recently featured in the Progress Times newspaper as a place where people could go to learn real self-defense techniques and how to properly apply them. Having trained and worked with various law enforcement agencies, most recently the Texas Tactical Police Officers Association in Dallas, we find ourselves in a unique position to benefit our community.

With that in mind and by popular demand we will be hosting and ADULT SEMINAR on Saturday April 17th at 11:00am.

This week marks the 2 year aniversary of the passing of Senior Master Ron Heimberger. Master Heimberger, a native of Utah, was the personal instructor of Jason and Sergio Solis and a pioneer in bringing the art of Wing Chun to the Rio Grande Valley. His impact and influence continue to be felt and his legacy of Wing Chun instruction will continue through Mile High Karate-Texas.

ANTI BULLY SEMINAR AT IDEA ACADEMY

As many of you know, bullying in schools is becoming an increasingly serious problem. The effects of bullying can be harmful both emotionally and physically. As always, Mile High Karate is dedicated to strengthening our community through our children. Our character development and leadership training is second to none in this respect. In that spirit we have teamed up with IDEA Academy in Mission, a charter school dedicated to making sure that a good education and a college degree are a reality for every child, to sponsor and present an Anti Bully Seminar for their student body. This seminar will be presented to each individual class through out the day and will cover strategies and methods for dealing with bullies and how to not become a bully.

Mile High Karate recently hosted a graduation ceremony at Peter Piper Pizza in Mission, Texas. Families that attended got a chance to see the hard work our students have put in rewarded with a rank advancement. Demonstrations were done and of course everyone was treated to a fun pizza dinner.
